The general consensus among people who deal with this sort of thing is that the English language has about 1 million words.

Don’t be intimidated. The people who deal with sort of thing – the dictionary makers – keep only about 170,000 of them between their covers.

Don’t let that daunt you, either. The experts say you and I probably keep 20,000 to 30,000 words between our ears.

Here’s true mastery of the language: Dr. Seuss used only 50 words to write “Green Eggs and Ham.”

Put together the right way, words are a powerful force. We use them to educate and entertain. We use them to inform and inspire.

We use them to generate responses, from happiness and joy to sadness and anger. We use our words to create emotions and to respond to them.

And to express them.

Let’s talk about making words work for you.

Bring your text to me for a fresh look. It could be as simple as a quick edit for spelling, grammar, punctuation and style. It could be as deliberate as a fact-check to assure accuracy and credibility.

Bring your ideas to me for a fresh start. It could be an overhaul of old writing to meet new needs. It could be a start on a clean page to compose an original message with your intended reader and desired response in mind.

Bring your trust to me to choose the best words for any need.

● Letters, memos, short stories, resumes, manuscripts.

● Sales pitches, reports, reviews, obituaries, instructions.

● News releases, announcements, manuals, web pages, biographies.

● Speeches, summaries, technical papers, event programs, advertisements.

● Photo captions, product descriptions, social media, persuasive appeals, brochures.

For more than 20 years, I have crafted my words to almost every purpose in The Indiana Gazette. In many of those years, the Pennsylvania Newsmedia Association and Associated Press Managing Editors of Pennsylvania have recognized my work for excellence above that of my peers.

My diverse experience in communication includes a quarter century in broadcast media, ranging from a spectrum of music programming and production to 15 years of award-winning radio news reporting.

I trained for my use of words in the well-respected Journalism & Communication program at Point Park University. I have adapted my skills with the evolution of the internet, as the founder of the first WDAD Radio news website and as editor of The Indiana Gazette Online since 2007.

I have applied my skills to advance my community as a public speaker and prolific writer on behalf of Indiana County Tourist Bureau, Indiana County Chamber of Commerce, American Red Cross of Indiana County, Knights of Columbus Council No. 1481, the Jimmy Stewart Museum, American Trauma Society, St. Bernard of Clairvaux Parish, the County of Indiana, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Indiana Garden Club, The Dance Academy and Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Finding words has been my way.

Somewhere in our million words are the best ones that you need for your purpose.

Let’s talk about your message, your mission and your medium.

Between you and me, we’ll reach your world.
